Solidarity with Care Workers taking 14 days strike action

Home Carers in Birmingham have been in dispute against managements plans to introduce a 3-split daily shift pattern that means staff must work from 7am until 10pm.

Despite trying to settle the dispute through limited action and negotiations, Birmingham City Council intend to plough ahead. In response home carers have re-balloted, beat the Tory ballot thresholds for the second time and have announced 14 days of strike action beginning on Tuesday 31 July and Wednesday 1 August.

At Sandwell General UNISON’s AGM in March, members voted unanimously to support Home Carers in Birmingham and a new message of support has been sent by the Branch Secretary which includes,

Naming 14 strike days should send a message to your Labour controlled authority that they need to intervene and stand up for the workforce to protect our public services. Doing otherwise is shameful for a party funded by the Trade Union movement.

Here’s to your victory. Solidarity Forever.

Tony Barnsley, Branch Secretary, Sandwell General UNISON Branch
